If you are a house owner you need to insure the buildings, permanent fixtures and fittings, garages, outbuildings, paths, patios, drives, gates and fences/walls. How do you know what sum to insure for then?

You need to take care with this as it is very important that your sums insured are adequate to rebuild your home in its entirety. If you under insure, even if you make a claim which is not for the full sums insured the insurers concerned will probably not pay your claim in full or even refuse payment altogether.

First of all you must bear in mind that the market value of your home has nothing to do with the correct sums insured since this is affected by such things as the area and amenities where you live and does not necessarily represent the rebuilding costs of your property.

On the other hand if you have a mortgage on your property it is quite likely that the lender would have asked for a survey of the property to be done and this would normally specify recommendations for the building costs of your property.

If you do not have such a report available it may be wise to instruct a surveyor to prepare a survey report for you, although of course they will charge you for this.
